I am always improving my systems thinking and love to find root causes and problems within complex socio-technical systems. This took me on a journey from an initial career in software development into designing for problems ranging from sustainability issues to everyday interactions with systems, apps and platforms for major corporations.

My focus is moving towards social issues in our current food security system with projects like food-is-free and various permaculture, entrepreneurship and social design groups making this part of my personal vision for my life.

My mission would translate to growing competency in design in both me and my design teams. In order to build better human experiences. Translating that in my day to day hobbies with community vegetable gardens running on permaculture practices and various startups initiatives bringing design to sectors that need is.

Having worked in the design and software development industry for more than fifteen years as a designer (Visual, UX, UI) and developer (Javascript, PHP, HTML, CSS), I have acquired invaluable knowledge, skills and experience in the design and the development of web applications, software and other solutions. Working on various major accounts in individual and corporate capacity ranging from FNB, Absa, Deloitte, Camelot International and Yamaha.

My technical and theoretical background allows me to identify patterns in systems and then use tried and tested design thinking methods to identify pain points with metrics and remedy these issues through prototyping and testing to have measurable outcomes.

Skills include:

Design for Human-Computer Interaction, Accessibility for disability, Research & analyses, Ethnographic research and heuristic evaluation, Collaboration (Brain Storming, Ideation & general white-boarding), Visual Design, Building and User-Testing on prototypes, Persona Creation, User story creation and prioritization, UX management & strategy I also started stepping into general product ownership, and project management completing various modules and certificates through Agile Alliance and Linkedin learning.

Empathy based design?

Empathic design is a user-centered design approach that pays attention to the user’s feelings toward a product. The empathic design process is sometimes mistakenly referred to as empathetic design.

What is Design Thinking?

The methodology commonly referred to as design thinking is a proven and repeatable problem-solving protocol that any business or profession can employ to achieve extraordinary results.

What is UX design?

User experience design can be explained as affecting all aspects of people’s interaction with a digital product. how it is perceivedlearned, and used. it’s the process of understanding someone’s needs, mental models and technical ability, then designing to delight them. the term ‘user experience’ is applied to software, web, mobile apps and other digital devices

How we design?

UX design is based off an attitude, a mindset that aims to catch those unfulfilled user needs in the context of a certain experience and turn them into design opportunities, through a process made of specific steps, mainly provided by the “design thinking tool set”.

Disciplines of User Experience?

Research

Understanding the people who use a product or system through observations

Information architecture

Identifying and organizing information within a product or system in a purposeful and meaningful way

Interaction design

Designing the interactive behaviors of a product or system with a specific focus on their use

Usability evaluation

Measuring the quality a user’s experience when interacting with a product or system

Accessibility evaluation

Measuring the quality of a product or system to be accessed irrespective of personal abilities and device properties

Visual design

Designing the visual qualities of a product or system in an aesthetically pleasing way

Content strategy

Planning for the creation, delivery, and governance of useful, usable content

To be an effective UX designer I try to have an understanding of all of the touch points a user has within the system or service I am designing. The goal should always be to have some level of clarity with all of the disciplines.
